Can Light Therapy Help With Sleep Disturbance in People with Dementia?

Light therapy could help manage the sleep problems of people with dementia, according to UK researchers.

Sleep disturbance occurs in most older people with dementia, say the researchers.

The authors highlighted three trials on bright light therapy, which, they say, is particularly effective in combating sleep disturbance.

This alternative to mainstream medicine is important because drugs, although moderately effective, can be hazardous, they say.

New treatments also need to be taken seriously because people with dementia are among the “most vulnerable” people in society, according to the team who come from hospitals in Manchester, Newcastle and Southampton.
